Clinical significance

Coagulation factor XIII (fibrin stabilizing factor) is formed in the liver, megakaryocytes (marrow), monocytes and placenta. Factor XIII deficiency is extremely rare - 1 in a few millionóin the general population, more often in populations where marriages are contracted by relatives. Severe deficiencyós result in bleeding from the umbilical cord stump, bleeding after circumcision, bleeding from the gums, formation of hematomasóin soft tissues, formation of pseudotumorsów, and impaired wound healing. A dangerous complication is móhemorrhages, whichóre the most common cause of deathóin these patients. Symptomsów observed in women include recurrent miscarriages, in men oligospermia and infertility. In laboratory studies, the results of all screening testsów of the coagulation system are normal.
