Creatinine levels are used to:
- assessment of kidney function,
- in diagnosing and monitoring treatment of kidney disease,
The assay is used in the diagnosis of:
- acute and chronic kidney disease,
- circulatory insufficiency,
- monitoring hypertension,
- diabetes,
- during treatment with neurotoxic substances or drugs excreted by the kidneys (dose adjustment).
An elevated creatinine occurs in acute and chronic renal failure and also in normal renal function due to dehydration (mainly in the elderly). Low creatinine occurs in starvation or steroid treatment.
