Description of the Study:
Determination of fecal zonulin concentration to assess intestinal epithelial permeability in the course of diseasesb inflammatory bowel diseases, autoimmune diseasesb and disorders of intestinal microbial rbalance.
Clinical significance:
Zonulin is a protein secreted by enterocytes and belongs to the pre-haptoglobin group. Zonulin is involved in regulating the permeability of tight junctions between cellsrs of the intestinal epithelium. The test is used to assess the permeability of the intestinal barrier.
Changes in intestinal barrier permeability can cause disorders with metabolic and inflammatory causes. Increased levels of zonulin are also found in diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritisw, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel diseases.
