HIV virus what is it?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is an acquired immune deficiency syndrome virus. The virus may not produce symptoms for up to 8 to 10 years, but during this time you can infect others. The virus can be prevented and therapy provided to stopthe development of AIDS.

Any person who suspects he or she is infected, should take an HIV test.

You can become infected with HIV:

• having sexual intercourse unprotected with an infected person, including through contact with secretions such as sperm, vaginal secretions, preejaculatory fluid, if it comes into contact with damaged skin or mucous membranes (such as a bitten lip),
• using the same needle as the infected person,
• through contact with blood, such as during dental procedures or during a fight,
• during birth or breastfeeding if the mother is infected.
