Toxoplasma gondii IgA antibodies

Clinical significance

Toxoplasma gondii - an intracellular parasite. The main reservoir is cats and feline animals. Infection occurs mainly through the oral route by eating food contaminated with oocysts excreted in cat feces, by eating raw or undercooked animal meat containing cysts of the parasite. Vertical infection of the fetus during childbirth can also occur. Diagnosis of toxoplasmosis is based on serological tests. IgA antibodies are indicative of recent infection, detected in serum are short-lived, disappearing earliest. IgM antibodies most often accompany the acute phase of the disease, appear within 7 days of infection and are present for up to 6-9 months. IgG antibodies are detected about 8 weeks after parasite invasion and remain present for life. To assess the time of infection, an IgG antibody avidity assay is performed.
