Potassium is an important electrolyte involved in many processes in the human body. 98% of the total amount of potassium is located intracellularly, in striated muscles, erythrocytes, liver cells, and bones. The remaining portion is found in the extracellular space. Potassium plays a vital role in maintaining the resting membrane potential of cells and is essential for the proper functioning of the nervous system, muscles, and heart. Excessive potassium loss through the gastrointestinal tract due to vomiting or diarrhea can lead to hypokalemia.
