Clinical significance

Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) is a gram-positive bacterium that causes inflammation of the góral and lower respiratory dróg as well as the sinuses and middle ear. Pneumococcus can also cause bacterial meningitis. Detection of the S. pneumoniae antigen with aberrant symptoms of infection can indicate active infection, but it can also occur in healthy people whoóre carriers of the pathogen.
