Why is prostate diagnostics important?
Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among men in Poland. According to onkologia.gov, around 21,000 new cases were recorded in 2022. The disease may develop silently for years without noticeable symptoms, which makes screening tests extremely important. This package combines tumor markers (PSA), inflammation indicators (CRP), kidney function markers, and urine analysis. Together, they enable early detection of abnormalities and increase the chance of effective treatment.
What tests are included in the package?
The “Prostate Diagnostics” package includes the following tests:
- Total PSA – the primary diagnostic marker of prostate health,
- Free PSA – analyzed together with total PSA, important for assessing prostate cancer risk,
- CRP – C-reactive protein for detecting inflammation,
- General urine test – basic screening for kidney and urinary tract diseases,
- Urine sediment test – microscopic analysis of red blood cells, white blood cells, bacteria, and crystals,
- Albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) – important for kidney monitoring and urological complications,
- Quantitative urine albumin – to assess kidney filtration function,
- Urinary creatinine – used to evaluate kidney performance and nephrological complications.
This combination of tests provides a comprehensive overview of a man’s health – from oncological markers to kidney and inflammatory parameters.
When should you take the prostate diagnostics package?
The package is valuable as a preventive tool, especially after the age of 40. It is particularly recommended for men who have:
- a family history of prostate cancer, especially at a young age,
- recurrent urinary tract infections, pelvic or lower abdominal pain,
- urination problems such as weak stream, frequent urination at night, or incomplete bladder emptying,
- blood in urine or semen,
- erectile dysfunction or decreased libido,
- general inflammatory symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue, muscle or joint pain,
- swelling of the legs or eyelids, high blood pressure, chronic tiredness.
The tests are also important for patients with coexisting conditions – such as cardiovascular, inflammatory, or metabolic diseases – which often accompany prostate cancer or benign prostatic hyperplasia.
How to prepare for the tests?
Proper preparation ensures reliable results:
- avoid sexual activity 48 hours before the PSA test,
- avoid long bicycle rides and intensive physical activity,
- refrain from alcohol and tobacco,
- perform most blood tests on an empty stomach – the last meal should be 8–12 hours before the test,
- collect the first morning urine sample, midstream, in a sterile disposable container.
Following these guidelines increases the accuracy of results, which should always be interpreted by a physician.
Clinical relevance and interpretation
Reference values vary depending on age, sex, and laboratory methods. Elevated PSA may indicate benign prostate enlargement, inflammation, or cancer. Increased CRP usually signals an infection or inflammation. Abnormal urine results may suggest kidney disease, bladder dysfunction, or urinary tract infection. Low total PSA may be linked to hormonal imbalance.
It is important to remember that no single result provides a full diagnosis. Interpretation always requires a physician’s expertise and clinical context.
