Clinical significance

Leishmaniasis - a parasitic tropical disease caused by the protozoan Leishmania. Infection occurs through mosquito bites, the reservoir is infected humans and animals. The disease can have a varied clinical picture: cutaneous, mucocutaneousóor organ-specific. Testing involves searching for protozoan DNA to determine the etiologic agent of infection.
