Clinical significance

Smoking is among the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and cancer. The most commonly used marker to confirm nicotine exposure (active or passive smoking) is the nicotine metabolite cotinine. The concentration of cotinine in urine depends on renal function, so it is recommended to convert the concentration of the marker in relation to the concentration of creatinine.
