Carbamazepine is an antiepileptic drug. It is also effective in various neurological disorders, for example, it helps prevent trigeminal neuralgia attacks. Indications for the use of carbamazepine include: epilepsy – partial seizures (simple, complex, secondarily generalized as a first-line treatment); generalized tonic-clonic seizures, idiopathic trigeminal or glossopharyngeal neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia in multiple sclerosis, alcohol withdrawal syndrome, prevention of recurrence of bipolar affective disorders (if lithium treatment is ineffective or contraindicated), treatment of agitation in the course of bipolar affective disorders or manic episodes.
Carbamazepine testing is performed to monitor its blood levels, which allows determination of whether the concentration is within the therapeutic range, as well as in cases of suspected overdose. Approximately 70% of the drug dose is excreted in the urine.
