Fecal calprotectin test
Calprotectin is a protein produced during the inflammatory process. It is released by white blood cells called neutrophils. When inflammation occurs in the gastrointestinal tract, neutrophils move into the area and release calprotectin, resulting in an increased amount in the stool. Fecal calprotectin testing is used in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel, and in differentiating inflammatory bowel disease from functional disorders in both adults and children.
