Clinical significance

Interferon gamma belongs to the pro-inflammatory cytokines. It is synethesized primarily by T lymphocytes and NK cells. It participates in the body's immune response, has antiviral activity and has an antiproliferative effect (e.g. on cancer cells). Determination of IFN-gamma levels is used for the diagnosis of latent tuberculous infections as an alternative and more specific test to tuberculin próby.
