When is it worth getting tested for HSV?
Symptoms of HSV
Most people who are infected with HSV are unaware of their infection.
The first lesions usually appear within a few weeks after infection with the virus
The first lesions usually appear within 2 weeks after infection with the virus.
The first herpes lesions appear within 2 weeks after infection with the virus During the first case of herpes, signs may appear, such as a second outbreak of sores and flu-like symptoms, i.e. fever and enlarged lymph nodes. However, most people who have HSV may never see sores, or they may have very mild symptoms that they don't even notice or may mistake them for an insect bite or other skin irritation.
Typical symptoms of HSV are:
- fever, headache and muscle pain
- painful blisters and ulcers at the site of infection (e.g., mouth, genital area, anus or rectum)
- septic ulcers on the genitals (blisters may be "hidden" in the vagina)
- irritated and swollen glands or lymph nodes
In untreated individuals, the lesions and pain usually pass within 3-4 weeks. The sores are usually healed on their own, but the virus will never disappear; it will remain in the person's body forever in a dormant form, causing no symptoms. The virus can become active again and cause new lesions. This is called recurrent herpes.
