Clinical significance

Phenol is determined as an indicator of exposure to phenol itself , benzene or toluene - as a product of their transformation in the body. Occupational exposure to phenol occurs mainlyóduring the use of phenolic resins. Phenol has a strong irritant effect on the skinóhand and mucous membranes. In larger doses, it exerts narcotic effects. In addition, it causes hemolysis of the blood and interferes with cellular respirationórk. It also has neuro, nephro and hepatotoxic effects, causing metabolic acidosis, among other things.
