Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus that causes disease only in humans, belonging to the Herpes family. The virus spreads directly, by the droplet route, and through sexual contact. After primary infection usually asymptomatic CMV, like other herpesviruses, remains in the body in a latent state, sometimes is secreted into saliva, urine and genital tract secretions.

Symptoms of cytomegalovirus infection

• bad mood and weakness
• muscle aches and headaches
• fever
• inflammation of the throat
• lymph node enlargement

Cytomegalovirus infection diagnosis

CMV DNA testing is used in the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus CMV testing is used when initiating treatment for infection with the cytomegalovirus or during treatment.

The PCR method can differentiate the active form of infection from the latent.
