Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative. Drugs in this group are typically used as anti-anxiety and sedative agents. Clonazepam also has a moderate sleeping and anticonvulsant effect. The drug is quickly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. After oral administration, it reaches maximum serum concentration after 1-4 h. The bioavailability is about 90%. The drug is metabolized in the liver. Side effects of Clonazepam include drowsiness and the possibility of mental and physical dependence. During long-term use, tolerance to the effects of the drug may develop and the effectiveness of treatment may be reduced. Monitoring of Clonazepam serum levels is aimed at confirming overdose and assessing the risk of toxic effects.
