Retinol-binding protein RBP in urine

Clinical significance

Determination of retinol-binding protein (RBP) in urine finds application in the diagnosis of kidney diseases. Its main function in the human body is to transport vitamin A. This protein is easily filtered in the glomeruli and almost completely reabsorbed in the proximal tubule. Physiologically, small amounts of it pass into the urine. An increase in RBP excretion in the urine is indicative of acute damage to the renal tubules. RBP also shows high stability at low pH in contrast to another indicator, beta2-microglobulin. RBP determination is also useful in diagnosing patients with primary hypertension.
