Protein S is a natural vitamin K-dependent anticoagulant. The main sites of synthesis are hepatocytes and medullary cells, Leydig medullary cells, and megakaryocytes.
Protein S together with protein C inhibits blood clotting. Determination of protein S is helpful in the diagnosis of unexplained thromboembolic incidentss, especially in peoples before the age of 50, e.g. pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, during coagulation disorders in neonatess, e.g. fulminant purpura, and in peoples with hereditary protein S deficiency.
Protein S deficiency is not a common factor in blood coagulation
Acquired deficiencyr of protein S is often associated with liver disease or vitamin K deficiency. Low levels of protein S occur in women in the early stages of pregnancy and in peopleb with AIDS syndrome (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
Before the protein S determination, oral anticoagulant drugsshould be discontinued (by arrangement with your doctor).
